Despite all the figures, numbers, predictions and speculations discussed publicly daily, I like to illustrate current circumstances on America's need of a health reform:
Married male, and house wife, both early 50s, enjoy benefits of the largest Cable-TV company in the U.S.. He is one of appr. 55,000 employees, makes appr. 70,000 dollars per year. Health insurance cost for this middle class couple is under $200 per month with a maximum deduction of $1,700 per year.
Now, he has to undergo major surgery, recovery takes more than one year. Rules and regulations of largest Cable-TV company cause termination of employment and loss of all benefits including health insurance.
As loss of income, loss of job, and loss of health insurance is not bad enough, it comes even worst under current laws and regulations:
COBRA, Americas 'holding tank' for people that lost their health insurance, is sending out a letter to people facing circumstances as described above, or under similar circumstances. This particular letter offers 3 different plans for keeping health insurance coverage. Plan 1 is $1,250 per month, plan 2 is $1,350 per month, plan 3 is $1,480 per month, depending on deductions one chooses. Ironically, COBRA portrays themselves as a generous entity because they offer their services for a total of 18 months, under certain circumstances even for 36 months.
How in the world can people afford $1,250, $1,350, or $1,480 for health insurance when head of the household lost family's main income source? Forget about the fact that the economy is not providing a lot of jobs for 50 year old males at the present time.
Without taking party for neither health reform promoters nor health reform opponents, aren't circumstances described enough proof that something has to be done?
Hundreds of thousands of American families if not millions experience hardship and live under similar circumstances. Politicians of this richest and most beautiful country on earth, please, don't waste more time on accusations of socialism, and other propaganda-like language!
Why don't you establish group insurances at 200 to 400 dollars premiums per month just like large corporations do? The large Cable-TV company mentioned above has 55,000 employees. People join this particular group insurance, and they are terminated as they are out of the job. How about group insurances for all construction workers, for all restaurant employees, for all realtors, for the unemployed, and for many other professional groups. I bet you they are all stronger than 55,000 people.
Just my humble opinion, and better than $1,250 to $1,480 for COBRA, isn't it?
